Unhealthy Foods

Dieting, Healthy Life

Most preschool children develop a taste for unhealthy food – salt, sugar and fat at home, and quickly learn which types of brand-name fast foods and sodas meet these preferences.

The specific nutritional choices you and your youngster make are crucial. Good nutrition is essential to good health and the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to think of their nutritional decisions as health decisions. Snacks are an important part of your child’s overall nutrition, so you need to make them just as nutritionally sound as their regular meals.
The food industry has been successful in reducing the number of television ads aimed at children in recent years and much of that advertising has moved to the Internet, social media and other digital platforms such as smart phones. Public health advocates have argued that the industry’s self-regulation is not enough and has pushed the government to set guidelines for unhealthy food.

Foods are classified as “Unhealthy food” if they…

unhealthy food … provide empty calories. These kinds of foods are high in calories but have little or no nutritional value. Donuts are a good example of empty calorie foods. If you eat one standard donut, you will get about 200 calories – mostly from fat and sugar. There are little or no vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in donuts.

unhealthy food … don’t have enough fiber. Low fiber means it will be much harder for your body to get the residue out the food of your system after you’ve digested it. A good example of a food low in fiber would be white bread. Two slices of white bread will give you only about 1 gram of fiber. Not nearly enough for a healthy gut.

unhealthy food … take nutrients from your body and leave you more nutritionally deficient than before you ate them. A good example would be soda pop drinks that are high in caffeine, sugar, and phosphorus. These drinks do not provide your body with any nutrition. They are full of caffeine, sugar, and phosphorus which cause your body to lose calcium from your bones.

unhealthy food … do damage to your body in one or more ways. An example of a food that does damage to your body is margarine and any other food that contains hydrogenated oils. When oils are hydrogenated, they form trans-fatty acids. Trans-fats do damage to a number of systems in the body and are linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

Some of the foods on this list are obviously unhealthy, though you may be surprised by a few. We have also included beverages, as well as the worst dishes from popular American chain restaurants, to round out the list. Since it would be difficult to rank the unhealthy foods according to health risk, we have categorized and alphabetized each item.

Unfortunately, many of the best-tasting foods in America are terrible for us and unhealthy foods. Whether they are high in calories, fat, sugar, sodium or some other nasty additive, we’ve listed America’s most unhealthy foods.

In fact, a study at John Hopkins University recently determined a link between high blood sugar and heart disease. This means high glycemic foods, such as the candy I just mentioned as well as many similar products, are inherently unhealthy food.

It is normal to have cravings for unhealthy food from time to time. However it is possible to curb those cravings by substituting health alternatives. Here are and few alternatives to commonly craved unhealthy food items.
