Tobacco is one of the greatest health risks that you could ever take and its impact on your health is comparable to a poor diet or not enough exercise. Smoking takes a significant toll on your lifespan with every cigarette estimated to cut around 11 minutes of your life. Think about that for a minute. 11 minutes might not seem much but there are plenty of people smoking upwards of a pack a day. That’s three and a half hours of life that you could be spending with your family or loved ones every day.

No wonder then that companies are charging upwards of 2000$ a year extra from smokers in healthcare and insurance costs simply because those employees are expected to get sick and require healthcare faster. Smokers also have a whole wealth of side effects associated with their habits, side effects that negatively affect their healthcare costs further. Dental insurance is also more expensive for smokers and there are higher premiums for life insurance as the individual is more likely to ‘cash out’ sooner.

So what is a good way of reducing these premiums? Why, giving up smoking, of course. The only problem with that is that nicotine is incredibly hard to shake, comparable to heroin and similar ‘hard’ drugs in terms of addictiveness. And very few therapies actually work when it comes to combatting smoking. NRT, or nicotine replacement therapy is one, although many medical professionals are still reticent towards it due to the perceived negative effects that nicotine has on a person’s cardiovascular system. But it is the only smoking reduction measure with proven effects. And thanks to electronic cigarettes like blucigs it is getting even easier.

Nicotine intake is an adjustable thing. The reasons why cigarettes are so addictive is a combination between the actual addictiveness of nicotine and the memetic psychological addictiveness of certain gestures, like having a cigarette with coffee or the act of bringing a cigarette to your lips. If those practices are maintained you could easily dial back the nicotine and get healthier quite quickly without feeling any of the side effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Quitting smoking can do wonders for your finances and your insurance premiums in particular but it is your health and your family’s health that will stand the most to gain. After all, having health insurance and not needing it is better than relying on it extensively.
