Diabetics are allowed to eat a lot of different fruits given that they consume such in moderate amounts. Fruits are good sources of fiber, vitamins and other essential nutrients. The body can gain good nutrition from eating fruits. However, it is no secret that some fruit types contain high sugar content. There are only two choices for diabetics on this: eat small amounts of the fruit or completely avoid it. Likewise, there are also specific dried fruits and fruit juices which diabetics should avoid in their diet. If you want to avoid as many diabetes related health complications then stick with fruits that are low in sugar or do not pose threat to your blood sugar level.


Avoiding Specific Type of Fresh Fruits


Several fruits should be eaten sparingly or not all because of their sugar content. Some fruits included in this category include: mangos, grapes, custard apples, chickoo, as well as bananas. You can eat a banana with a meal but never make it two. If you really want to eat bananas and are afraid of what it might do to your condition, better just limit it to half a banana. Such serving already corresponds to 15g of carbohydrates.


Recommended diets for diabetics note that fruit servings should be limited to 15g of carbohydrates thus that’s about as far as you can go. Other fruits which you need to look out for because of high sugar content include: papayas, pineapple, apricots, kiwi, and watermelon. Limit their quantities or completely take them out of your diet. There are so many fruits that you can eat and are low in sugar. You shouldn’t suffer just because you wanted some fruity dosage.


Avoiding Dried Fruits and Juices to Avoid


Dried fruits are allowable but some of them should be eaten in a limited manner. Dried fruits that are good or ideal for diabetics to eat include dried cranberries, raisins, cherries, peaches, apricots and pears. Take note of the sugar content and see whether the brand has added too much sugar or not. As much as possible do not eat dried figs because they contain a lot of sugar. Fresh frigs, on the other hand, may be taken in moderation. Dried dates should also be avoided. Dates are known to have one of the highest glycemic loads out of all dried fruits.


Fruit juices that use corn syrup or sugar in them should not be consumed. Remember that there are many processed juices around and most of them do not contain as much or only contain a little amount of the supposed real juice. Try to keep it as natural as possible. Further, keep your fruit juice consumption a maximum of 4oz. only. This should keep your diet balanced and avoid any type of bad effects on your blood sugar level. Getting to know which food items are good for you and which are not is essential to keep your diabetes at bay. It is the biggest favor that you will ever do for yourself.
